Face Off University provides a fun, judgment free, creative environment in which to explore the fundamentals of improvisation. Using group games and exercises that any novice can master, our class is ideal for discovering “what improv is” and unlocking the creative potential inside all of us. At the end of the five week course, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their freshly honed improv skills and are officially inducted into the ‘Face Off Universe’ after which they join the rest of the Face Off family in an open improv jam session. This is a whole new approach to improv training that leaves you feeling inspired and invigorated!
Since it’s inception in 2011, Face Off University has developed talent that includes an Emmy-award winning musician, radio personalities, principal commercial talent, a television pundit, and Broadway and nationally touring professional actors. Additionally, Face Off conducts performance workshops at colleges and universities across the country and in-house professional corporate workshops for companies looking to develop communication and teamwork skills in the office environment.
Students begin with the Intro to Face Off class, a comfortable, fun, and creative environment in which to explore the fundamentals of improvisation and introduce students to Face Off's unique approach. Using group games and exercises that any novice can master, the intro class is ideal for unlocking creative potential. Next you join the ongoing Face Off Improv class, where each week we explore different disciplines including: short, mid, long, and experimental improvisation. Become a part of the Face Off Universe and dare to be awesome!

— TJ Moss, Emmy Award Winner
It was an invaluable tool in my artistic recovery… I damn near laughed my face off!
— Christopher Hahn, Political Pundit, Host of the Christopher Hahn Show on LI's 103.9PM
I use my improv training every day on TV and no one helped me develop those skills more than Face Off.
— Matt Klan, Actor
Your training allowed me to have a great on-camera interview and I landed the biggest part I've ever had... solely because of my Face Off training.
— Markesha McCoy, Rock of Ages
Only class I've taken where I was 100% comfortable and always looked forward to it. Not only are these men extremely talented and accredited in their own right, they are so passionate in teaching you every thing they know. Face Off alone has helped me relax, and allowed my personality to shine through from auditioning all the way to just holding a conversation. Proud to put them on my résumé.
— Hettie Barnhill, Broadway Actress/Choreographer Spiderman After Dark, Leap of Faith, Fela!
The first thing I loved was the vibe of the company. Everyone was so friendly and inviting which made me feel included from the beginning. The second thing I loved was the caliber of talent that they produced. The actors in their shows are some of the best I've ever seen! Last but not least was the price. It seemed too good to be true that I could take a 5 week improv class for such a low rate. But YEP!! It was very true.
The classes have helped me unlock parts of my artistry that I never knew existed. Every class I was challenged to be fully present, to think and move quicker and to trust myself and the people around me. At the end of each class, I noticed how energized and grounded I felt. Also, my confidence was spilling over in other aspects of my acting career. I was getting call backs from more auditions. By the end the end of the five weeks, I knew one thing, that was that I was ready to sign up for the next 5 weeks.
After you show off your new skills at the Face Off JAM, you may decide you need more Face Off! That's understandable! The ONGOING FACE OFF IMPROV CLASS runs in 5 week cycles (like the Intro Class), working different improv skills and formats each time:
Students of ALL levels learn and grow side by side at Face Off Unlimited's Global Headquarters in Astoria, Queens (NQ to Astoria Blvd). With expert instruction from a different Face Off partner, each 5 cycle focuses on specific skills, games, and forms in a fun and supportive class.
After class, grab a beer from the fridge, hang in the lounge with your fellow students and talk shop! On sunny days, enjoy our private rooftop patio and the fellowship of the Face Off family of improvisers!
Make New Friends,
Instructor: Lyle Pinder
Check Back Soon for Next Class Date!
The goal of this class is to gain a better understanding of what agencies and executives in the industry expect from a modern screenwriter; the various categories of screenwriting (Broadcast & Cable Television, Feature & Short Film, Documentary, Animation, and Digital Media) and how they vary; the importance of developing a creative process that serves your needs; and how to turn an idea into a concept, and a concept into a treatment.
Students will leave with the basic knowledge needed to submit themselves and their ideas to literary agents, network executives, and producers. Students will also acquire the tools required to develop a concept and write a treatment or spec script.
Lyle Pinder has spent the better part of a decade as a screenwriter, script consultant, and independent producer. As a writer, he has worked with well known companies such as NBC Universal, The Weinstein Company, Comedy Central, CN, Hulu, and Amazon Studios. Lyle has also counseled many independent writers and producers during the scripting and development stages. His former company, Dick Wilkins Productions, specialized in helping indie screenwriters break through, self-produce scripts, and navigate the distribution market.
